Mayberry, NC: Your Guide to Andy’s Hometown
Planning a visit to Mayberry, NC? I live just outside of Mount Airy – the real life Mayberry – and love sharing all the fun things about this adorable town.
There are so many cute things related to the Andy Griffith Show and the actor himself, so if you love the show then you’ll likely love visiting too.
You can experience a slower pace of life as you meander down Main Street or explore the Andy Griffith Show replica buildings.
This guide includes everything you’ll need to know about coming for a day trip or staying for a few days!

Is Mayberry a Real Town?
While it’s not called Mayberry in real life, Mount Airy is Andy Griffith’s hometown and the place that the fictitious “Mayberry” was based on in the show. Andy was one of the most famous people from North Carolina!
It’s located about 30 minutes north of Winston-Salem in the foothills of North Carolina surrounded by tons of amazing Yadkin Valley wineries, views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and plenty of southern charm.
There is a cute downtown area with some nods to the show but also plenty of other things to do in Mount Airy that are unrelated to the show.
If you want even more small town charm, then head 10 minutes south on Highway 52 to Pilot Mountain – “Mount Pilot” – where there are even more mom-and-pop shops and restaurants.
Things to Do in Mayberry, NC
Here are just a few things to do in Mayberry that are specifically related to Andy and the show. There are plenty more things to do here too though!
Visit the Andy Griffith Museum
If you want to learn more about Andy’s life, history of the show, plus memorabilia from the Andy Griffith Show and Matlock, then you’ll want to visit the Andy Griffith Museum.
There are beautiful museum gardens right next to the entrance to the museum which you can visit for free.
Admission fees are only $8 per adult (less for kids) so it’s very affordable and you also get access to many other Surry Arts Council exhibits like the Old-Time Music Heritage Hall at the Historic Earle Theatre and the Mount Airy to Mayberry Photo exhibit.
Don’t miss the colorful Mayberry Mural beside the parking lot!
Take a Squad Car Tour
You can experience a ride through Mayberry in a squad car that looks exactly like the one Andy and Barney drove in the show!
The tour includes many iconic Mayberry attractions like Wally’s Service Station, The Old Jail, and even Andy’s childhood home.
Of course, you also ride down Main Street and head out to see the largest open-faced granite quarry in the world. The tour guides are full of fun facts and so knowledgeable about Andy and the town of Mount Airy.
Check Out the Andy Griffith Playhouse
If you’re into drama, then check to see if a show is running at the Andy Griffith Playhouse. They don’t have shows every weekend so it’s a bit hit or miss.
The shows vary as well from anything like The Nutcracker and A Christmas Carol around Christmas time to Grease or The Lion King during the year.
Stop in at Wally’s Service Station and Mayberry Courthouse & Jail
Definitely stop by these spots that look like they’ve come straight out of the Andy Griffith Show scenes. Take a photo outside of Wally’s Service Station by the old gas pumps then head inside to browse their gifts and Mayberry souvenirs.
At The Old Jail and Courthouse you’ll want to get a photo sitting behind Andy’s desk or standing behind bars!
Walk in Floyd’s Barber Shop
Take a step back in time at Floyd’s Barber Shop on Main Street and get your photo taken in the barber chair.
Spend some time browsing the photos along the “Wall of Fame” showing other famous folks who have visited before. Hours vary at Floyd’s so stop in before lunch if this is on your must-do list.
Restaurants in Mayberry
There are plenty of delicious restaurants in Mount Airy, but here are a few that will give you a fun Mayberry feel. You’ll think you stepped back in time at each one of them.
Snappy Lunch
Snappy Lunch is the most well known Mayberry restaurant and they are famous for their pork chop sandwich. They also serve egg & meat plates, biscuits & gravy, plus cheeseburgers and other sandwiches for lunch.
This casual spot serves breakfast and lunch only and is located right on Main Street downtown. They open early at 6am everyday except Sunday so it’s perfect for any early risers.
Open since 1923, Snappy Lunch is the only existing business in Mount Airy that was mentioned on the Andy Griffith Show.
Leon’s Burger Express
If you want a delicious cheeseburger for lunch, then Leon’s is a wonderful option. It looks like an old school diner with the counter seats and everything and is cash only.
They serve breakfast and lunch as well and are also located on Main Street. Their California burger is their specialty which comes topped with lettuce, mayo, grilled onions, and tomato.
If you don’t want a burger, they also have other sandwich options, meat & veggie plates, and a southern breakfast menu.
O’Dell’s Sandwich Shop
This is the only restaurant that isn’t located downtown, but if you’re out and about and want a unique experience then stop by O’Dell’s.
It’s another cash only spot so you’ll want to hit the ATM, but it’s a drive-in which makes for a neat lunch spot.
They are open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and have all kinds of sandwiches, salads, and larger dinner plates like pulled pork and popcorn shrimp on the menu.
Don’t miss the milkshakes or sundaes for dessert!
Barney’s Cafe
Another casual cafe located downtown, Barney’s serves southern comfort food for breakfast and lunch.
The service is known to be fast and friendly and the homemade desserts are especially delicious and always changing.
This spot typically pleasantly surprises people!
The Loaded Goat
Now this one is a little bit different as it’s more of a sports bar, but the name is related to the show (and it’s one of our favorite restaurants) so I had to include it.
The Loaded Goat refers to the Andy Griffith Show episode where the goat ate sticks of dynamite and there’s a little explanation on the menus.
Prices here are going to be higher than the other restaurants on this list and this one isn’t as family-friendly.
Their burgers have won competitions in NC for multiple years in a row and they have all kinds of fun topping combinations. The bar is stocked with plenty of local beers plus some wine options.
How to Get to Mayberry
Mount Airy is located right off of Highway 52 about 30 minutes north of Winston-Salem. It’s very close to the Virginia line in the foothills of North Carolina.
Most people will drive to Mayberry and it’s very close to the intersection of I-74 and I-77. If you’re coming in from the south, you’ll likely come in on Hwy 52 and if you’re coming from the north, it will likely be 77.
The closest major airport is in Greensboro which is about an hour drive from Mount Airy. Cheaper flights can typically be found coming into Charlotte or Raleigh, but then the drive is about 2 hours.
Day Trip to Mayberry
While there is plenty to keep you busy for a few days, some people just want to take a day trip to Mayberry.
First thing I would recommend is taking a Squad Car Tour so you can get your bearings and figure out what other stops you want to make.
You’ll be at Wally’s Service Station and the Mayberry Courthouse & Jail after that so stop in for your photos. If you want to make a stop at Floyd’s Barber Shop then do that right after.
Grab lunch at one of the restaurants mentioned above. Snappy Lunch was the only one mentioned in the show, but you can’t go wrong with any of them.
Stop in at the Andy Griffith Museum to learn more about the actor and the shows he was part of. Depending on how interested you are, this could take 30 minutes or up to two hours.
Finally, spend the rest of your time checking out the locally owned shops along Main Street and stopping in somewhere for a sweet treat like Prudence McCabe or coffee at Page’s Books & Coffee.
Hotels in Mayberry, NC
If you want to stay longer than a day, then Mayberry has plenty of lodging options. There are only a few hotels in the area, but there are also some beautiful bed & breakfasts and vacation rentals. You can even stay in Andy’s childhood home!
Mayberry Motor Inn
While the Mayberry Motor Inn is a bit dated, that adds to its charm and appeal. The rooms are clean and comfortable and the owners of the Inn are known to be incredibly kind.
It’s also located right off of Hwy 52 just north of town and just five minutes from downtown so it’s very convenient to everything.
The grounds are beautifully decorated and they also have a walking trail and pool to enjoy when it’s open for the season.
Hampton Inn Mount Airy
Hampton Inn’s are my personal go-to brand when I’m not staying at a locally owned place. This one is very close to the intersection of Hwy 52 and Hwy 601 and also just 5 minutes from downtown.
The rooms are clean, spacious, and beds are comfortable. They have an indoor pool which is popular with kids and the continental breakfast is said to be pretty great for hotel standards.
Staff is super friendly and helpful and this hotel is also pet friendly.

Holiday Inn Express & Suites
Friendly staff, pet friendly rooms, and free breakfast make this hotel a solid choice as well. They also have an indoor pool for you to enjoy.
It’s consistently clean and has everything you would expect from a Holiday Inn Express. If you’re trying to choose between this one and the Hampton Inn, I think it comes down to which brand you are loyal to.

Bed & Breakfasts
There are multiple adorable bed & breakfasts in Mount Airy so if you want more of a personal touch to your lodging then go with one of these options.
Heart & Soul Bed & Breakfast is within easy walking distance of downtown and tons of Mayberry attractions.
This 1901 home has a wraparound porch where you can sit and talk awhile. There are six different suites to choose from and each are decorated differently.
Bee’s Bed & Breakfast is also located downtown but is smaller and has three different room options. Great if you have a large family though and want to rent out the whole house.
No matter which one you choose, they both have terrific owners and amazing breakfasts.
Mayberry Festivals
There are multiple festivals and events in Mount Airy throughout the year, but these are the ones that play on Mayberry and highlight the small town roots of the area.
Mayberry Days
The week long festival is family-friendly and celebrates all things related to The Andy Griffith Show. There are multiple concerts throughout the week, live performances, vendors, and more.
It’s all about taking things back to a simpler time and enjoying each other’s company. There is also a parade downtown and all of the events are within walking distance so it’s very convenient.
All kinds of special guests have attended past festivals including cast members, producers, directors, and writers.
Mayberry Days is held in September every year and in 2026, it will be September 21 – 27.
Autumn Leaves Festival
The Autumn Leaves Festival has been held in Mount Airy since 1966 and is still a favorite with locals and visitors alike.
For three days, vendors line the streets and sell their handmade items and local community organizations set up to serve southern comfort food from stands.
There’s live music plus crafts and toys for kids so the whole family can have some fun. Don’t miss the cornhole tournament!
This tradition started as a way to celebrate the end of the tobacco and apple harvest seasons and now is a popular weekend every October to visit Mayberry.
Mayberry Farm Fest
This is a newer festival held in downtown Mount Airy in the spring which is a great time to visit the Yadkin Valley.
There is a Tractor Parade on Friday and vendors set up on Saturday selling all kinds of things from crafts to household items.
While the 2025 Mayberry Farm Fest was on May 16th & 17th, as of January, the 2026 dates have not yet been set. Check their website for the latest on schedules.
Mayberry, NC Weather
You’ll typically find decent weather in Mayberry year-round as its location in the foothills of NC ensures it doesn’t get terribly hot (typically) or too cold.
In the winter months, lows are between the mid-20s to mid-30s while highs are around 50° in January and February but the average jumps to 60° in March.
Spring weather sees the temperature averages jump up pretty quickly. In April the average highs and lows are 70° and 42° respectively while June sees averages of 84° highs and 60° lows.
Summer gets a little heated with the high average in the low to mid-80s and the low average ranging from mid-50s to low-60s.
The fall weather is abosolutely beautiful, but quickly chills down in December. Highs average 71° in October but are down to 51° by December. Lows go from 44° to 28° averages.
Average rainfall is generally around 7 – 8 days in a month, but October averages 6 days on the low end and July averages 10 days on the high end.
