About 45 minutes north of Houston, you’ll find Conroe, TX which is a very popular weekend getaway destination because of Lake Conroe. There are so many fun things to do in Lake Conroe!

The lake is bordered by the towns of Conroe and Montgomery on the southern end and then the Sam Houston National Forest on the northern end of the lake.

While Conroe is technically the name of the town, if you aren’t from the area then you may have heard it called Lake Conroe too.

Either way, I highly recommend a weekend trip to Conroe as it’s one of the coolest towns near Houston.

10 Things to Do in Lake Conroe, TX

Conroe is a fantastic vacation destination because there are so many great opportunities to get outdoors while the amenities of a city are right there too.

One of the main attractions are water sports; you can enjoy swimming, fishing, boating, and more. Then at the end of the day, there are several breweries and wineries in the area, as well as some great restaurants so you can relax and unwind.

1. Lake Conroe Water Activities

If you’re looking for a great place to enjoy some water activities, look no further than Lake Conroe. This popular Houston-area lake has it all.

Rent a pontoon boat and an innertube if you want a day full of adventure. Jet skis are also popular on the lake and you can rent both at 1097 Watersports.

Lake Conroe is also known for largemouth bass fishing and if you’re an avid fisherman then the chance for these trophy bass will have your adrenaline pumping.

There are plenty of fishing guides that you can hire which is the way to go if you aren’t familiar with the area. The guides know exactly where to go depending on weather conditions and season.

You can rent a kayak and get a workout in or if you’re like me then you can just lounge in your kayak by the lake shore and watch the birds. I wish I brought binoculars with me!

I wouldn’t recommend SUP for this lake because of all the boat activity. I would definitely be nervous of getting turned over.

Whether you’re looking for a fun day out with the family or an adventurous and romantic date, Lake Conroe is the perfect spot.

Fishing is also one of the popular things to do in Freeport, TX which is just south of Houston.

2. Catch Some Live Music

Conroe is actually certified as a Music Friendly Community which means you’ll find great talent here and you can see live music almost every night of the week somewhere nearby.

While I was in Conroe I was able to visit The Red Brick Tavern, Southern Star Brewing, and B-52 Brewing which all host musicians often.

Other popular local venues are The Corner Pub, Papa’s on the Lake, and Pacific Yard House. From April through September on every first Thursday of the month there’s a band at Heritage Park in downtown Conroe.

I got to see an Eagle’s Tribute Band at one of the First Thursday Free Concerts and they were fantastic!

3. Make a Stop on the Craft Beverage Trail

One of the very popular things to do near Lake Conroe is to grab a drink! What better way to end a day on the lake?

There are ten different places in Conroe making craft beverages whether that’s beer, wine, liquor, or mead. I was able to visit five of those while I was in town.

Southern Star Brewery is the largest brewery in the area. They have a large and welcoming bar area upstairs above their production facility. It really promotes community as the seating is at long picnic tables. They also have an outdoor area with a stage and separate bar.

B-52 Brewing is another one that I got to visit and they have an amazing outdoor space with yard games and picnic tables spread out among the trees. Both breweries host lots of events throughout the year.

Fass Brewery was a cool spot downtown that makes you feel like you stepped back in time when you walk through the door.

BE Winery is a local winery on 15 acres near Conroe where you can visit their tasting room or The Lounge on Main. I was able to visit The Lounge and it’s an upscale spot that offers wine, beer, and cocktails.

The Ferm Meadery is also located downtown and they serve still and draft meads – still is most like wine while draft is carbonated. They also do honey flights which I thought was unique.

Other craft beverage spots near Conroe are Bartlett’s Distillery, Copperhead Brewery, Frankenboltzzz, Golden Oak Micro Cellar, and H-wines.

If you want to visit multiple spots then check out the Craft Beverage Pass which is valid for two days. The pass gets you a flight or pour of your choice at participating locations!

4. Take a Hike in W.G. Jones State Forest

With almost 15 miles of trails and two small lakes, W.G. Jones State Forest is the perfect place for a hike when you don’t want to drive far.

It’s one of the largest working urban forests in the US and is located just off Interstate 45. The Sweetleaf Nature Trail is a nice walk but you’ll need to stop by the main office to get the gate code.

If you want to hike near the lakes then use this pin for navigation to that parking lot. Stop by the main office if you want to pick up a trail map or you can find the PDF here.

5. Have Dinner on the Lake

There isn’t much better than a good dinner with great views. If you can time it to where you’re there at sunset, it will make the experience even better.

I was able to dine at Conroe Lake House but sadly it was raining that night so I wasn’t able to fully enjoy the views. My tacos were delicious though!

Other popular options are Monty’s Lighthouse, Kitchen Tales, and Fajita Jack’s.

If you’ll be in the Houston area for a while then check out these fantastic restaurants in Alvin, TX too.

6. Get a Day Pass for Margaritaville Resort

If you’re looking to relax poolside with a drink in hand for the day then Margaritaville Lake Resort is for you. This gives you access to many of their fun outdoor amenities!

Enjoy the private beach or lazy river at their Jolly Mon water park. They also have an infinity pool and waterslide pool plus two hot tubs.

Grab drinks from the swim-up bar and try your hand at mini-golf. If you get bored with the pool then head into the arcade.

The day pass also includes WiFi and self-parking for the day. You can get lunch from their restaurant on site – the Landshark Bar & Grill.

7. Attend an Event or Festival

Conroe has some fun festivals throughout the year that you should put on your bucket list!

The Conroe Cajun Catfish Festival happens every year on the second weekend of October. All about Texas Country music and Cajun food, this is a huge event put on by The Friends of Conroe.

In April of 2022 the Conroe Crossroad music festival was held but dates have not been announced for next year. They had about 40 shows from a variety of Texas artists.

On weekends in October and November, Conroe also hosts the Texas Renaissance Festival. Each weekend has a different theme!

The Conroe Christmas Celebration consists of multiple events throughout the holiday season and then in the spring keep a lookout for the Montgomery County Fair.

These would all be fun things to do near Lake Conroe! Festivals are also one of the most popular things to do in Alvin, TX.

8. Go Shopping Downtown

Even though Conroe is a city, they still have a quaint downtown area with a small town feel. There are some cute shops downtown along N Main Street where you can pick up gifts or something for yourself.

Check out Mimi’s on Main if you love antiques but they also have newer items as well. Everyone loves the reasonable prices and hospitality of the employees.

Sweet Texas Treasures Boutique is right down the road and carries women’s clothing, home goods, accessories, Texas souvenirs, and more.

Main Street Merchants is an adorable women’s boutique full of “unique, handcrafted, & small batch items.” Here you’ll find clothes, accessories, and great gift items. They also carry pet and baby items.

Next door is Branding Iron Custom Gifts which is very popular for their leather goods. They also sell hats, men’s grooming supplies, candles, bar accessories, and even knives.

9. Visit the Sam Houston National Forest

For another great place to go hiking, visit Sam Houston National Forest. Here you can set your feet on the popular Lone Star Hiking Trail. The full trail is 128 miles long so an out-and-back or section hike is best.

Here are maps for the Stubblefield Section part of which hugs Lake Conroe, the Huntsville Section, and the Winters Bayou Section. You can also find information for these hikes on AllTrails.

Huntsville State Park is also a great way to see part of the National Forest. The most popular trails here are the Chinquapin Loop Trail (moderate) and the Dogwood and Prairie Branch Loop (easy).

If you’re a National Park enthusiast like me, then Conroe is only an hour and a half from Big Thicket National Preserve which is one of the best things to do near Beaumont, TX.

10. Have Pie for Breakfast

I have a huge sweet tooth so I was in heaven visiting Pie in the Sky for breakfast. They have savory meals too but one of their specialties is The Pie Waffle.

Choose any of their pie flavors, and they make it into a waffle, and then put a mini slice of pie on top. Absolutely incredible. They are also a bakery so you can take some sweets for the road!

Try one of their ginormous cake balls, cookies, or sweet breads. If you haven’t had too much pie then you can also take a pie slice or whole pie home.
