Looking for the best Yadkin Valley wineries? I’ve got you covered! As a lifelong resident of the Yadkin Valley, I’ve done plenty of research when it comes to the vineyards around here.

There are over 40 different wineries in the Yadkin Valley so it can be difficult to choose if you only have a day or two to spend in the area. I’ve been to just about all the wineries in the area and am here to help you decide!

This is one of the best wine regions on the East Coast and truly an underrated gem so if you’re a wine lover then you don’t want to miss out.

The best part about visiting the Yadkin Valley is the laid-back feel of the wineries, friendly people, and the affordability of the area.

You’ll definitely want to spend a whole weekend in the Yadkin Valley!

What Types of Wines are Produced in the Yadkin Valley?

This area is known for its award-winning wines, particularly the dry reds. The soil and climate in the region provide an ideal environment for grapes to thrive and I’ve been told that the conditions here are very similar to what you would find in Tuscany.

While many people immediately think of muscadine wine when they think of North Carolina wines, the Yadkin Valley is a little different. About 70% of the region’s grapes produce dry wines while the other 30% are muscadines.

You’ll find Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, & Cabernet Franc here as well as whites like Riesling, Pinot Grigio, & Viognier. Many other varietals are produced here as well.

Best Yadkin Valley Wineries

Here are 26 of the top wineries in the Yadkin Valley! This list is based on my experience so of course, it is influenced by my personal taste in wine. Other factors are ambiance, views, and price point.

1. Grassy Creek Vineyard & Winery

Grassy Creek was once a working dairy farm and the tasting room is in the old horse stables. As you drive in, pay attention to the huge white barn on your right which is now where they make the wine.

The tasting room is open and cozy with a huge fireplace right as you walk in, a large bar, and lots of seating options. They also have outdoor seating in front of the tasting room.

Here you’ll find Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chambourcin, and a few different blends. My favorite is their Barbera but my husband loves their semi-sweet Guernsey Red.

Bring your hiking shoes because they have multiple different trails on property! We love taking their Grassy Creek Trail which connects to the Carter Falls Trail.

They have tons of events and live music so make sure to check their calendar. They also have cheese, crackers, and snack items available for purchase.

2. Elkin Creek Vineyard

Elkin Creek has delicious wines, but I think my favorite part of this winery is the Sunday pizzas. They make their sourdough crust from scratch and have unique toppings combinations like bacon and brie (my favorite). They’re one of the best restaurants in Elkin!

Just note that reservations are required for pizzas so book this as soon as you know what dates you will be here.

You can also take a walk down by the creek behind the tasting room when the weather is nice. They have a gorgeous tasting room and a small covered patio that is a nice spot to hang out for a while.

Wines available here are Chardonnay, Sangiovese, Dornfelder, and a few others. Their Soft White is a great white table wine and Adequate Red is one of my favorite red blends. They also have a couple of dessert-style wines.

3. Adagio Vineyards

I think Adagio is a very underrated Yadkin Valley winery! It’s never overly crowded anytime we go so the experience is so peaceful.

Their tasting room is very close to Elkin Creek so it’s easy to hit these two together. We always do a tasting when we go here because you get to try eight different wines and we like most of them here.

There are a few tables inside but they also have picnic tables outside and a fire pit. You’ll find cute gift items for purchase in their tasting room as well as snack items like cheese and crackers.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Chardonnay are a few wines that you’ll find here but I also love their Coda (semi-sweet Traminette) and the Arandell (similar to Pinot Noir).

4. Carolina Heritage Vineyard & Winery

Carolina Heritage came under new ownership last year! I’ve only met the wife but she was very welcoming and kind. This is one of my favorite wineries near Elkin, though I don’t make it over here as often as I would like.

They were the first USDA-certified organic vineyard in North Carolina which is impressive with all the insects we have to deal with around here.

The tasting room feels like a log home and all the accents are wood as well so it’s very homey-feeling. There are tables inside and a couple outside plus a few rocking chairs.

You’ll find some locally-made items for sale and cheese and crackers for purchase if you’re hungry.

They have a variety of dry and sweet wines available. My favorite dry red is their Three C’s blend but I also love their Glogg when it’s heated in the winter.

5. Golden Road Vineyards

Golden Road is surrounded by beautiful farmland and has a quaint tasting room with indoor and outdoor seating. The outdoor space is a very nice spot to hang out as they have it shaded for the sunny days and fire pits for the cooler weather.

On most weekends, they have food trucks and live music events which make it a popular spot. We love getting the charcuterie boxes here as well.

Traminette, Petite Verdot, and Merlot are a few wines you’ll find here but they also have some blends with fun names like Bumping Holler and Mountain Park Mist.

6. Round Peak Vineyards

There are two different brands at Round Peak – one being Round Peak Wines and the other is Skull Camp which carries wine and beer. One has sweet wines while one has the dry. You can try both at the tasting room in Mount Airy or head to the Skull Camp Smokehouse in Elkin.

There’s a large patio at the tasting room at Round Peak where you can sit with a gorgeous view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. They have grills available to use and there’s also a disc golf course that meanders through the vineyard.

7. Serre Vineyards

Serre is one of the more expensive wineries in the region, but the views and atmosphere here are worth visiting every so often.

The tasting room is in a large, modern barn but we are always sure to visit when the weather is nice so we can sit outside. This spot offers gorgeous views of the Blue Ridge Mountains!

During the colder months, they have solo stoves out with Adirondack chairs surrounding them. They even bring out S’mores kits for you.

Charcuterie boxes from State of Graze are available until sold out and they also serve a variety of other snacks, beer, and non-alcoholic options.

Here you’ll find Petite Verdot, Sangiovese, and Tannat plus many other great options.

8. Old North State Winery

In downtown Mount Airy, in what was an old hardware store, you’ll find an upscale restaurant and winery. This is truly fine dining in a more relaxed atmosphere.

Their weekly events include a Thursday Night Tasting Club and a Chef’s Table on Friday and Saturday nights. It’s one of the best places to eat in Mount Airy.

The building is also on the local ghost tour so be sure to look out for anything supernatural. One of their popular wines, Restless Soul, is named for their resident ghost in the basement.

Mount Airy was the hometown of Andy Griffith – one of the many famous people from NC – so you’ll find many nods to the Andy Griffith Show while you’re downtown.

9. Shelton Vineyards

Shelton is one of the oldest and most well-respected wineries in the area. They have a huge tasting room with a gift shop selling fun gifts and snack items. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating.

They also have a few chairs set up down by their pond. Harvest Grill is their on-site restaurant and it’s one of the best in the county.

Their wine list is huge so you shouldn’t have a problem finding something that you like here.

Shelton’s wine is widely distributed across North Carolina and the surrounding states. A visit to the tasting room should not be missed though.

10. Haze Gray

Haze Gray is relatively new but they quickly made a name for themselves and they’ve won multiple awards for their wines.

The tasting room is very spacious on the inside but our favorite spot to sit is on the wraparound porch near the parking lot where the view is of beautiful rolling hills.

In the summer, they sell wine slushies and also sell the wine/mix combo so you can make your own at home. They have a neat little gift shop with wine-related gifts and sell cheese and crackers for snacks.

As for their wine, you really can’t go wrong with any of it. They have Pinot Grigio, Traminette, Chambourcin, Merlot, and more. Sweet wine lovers will enjoy their Blossom Line with Peach, Cherry, and Blackberry.

11. Hidden Vineyard

One of my absolute favorite Yadkin Valley wineries! The owners here are amazing, wine is fantastic, and their tasting room is just too cute.

They have a bar inside where you can go through a tasting and tables or couches if you want to grab a glass or bottle. Their outside area is so nice though and that’s typically where we hang out.

They have picnic tables, outdoor couches, and some Adirondack chairs facing the vines. Popcorn is available as a free snack and they sell beer in addition to their wine.

My favorite wine here is their Franc the Tank which is made with blueberries and their Cabernet Franc. All of their dry reds are fantastic though – the Cab Franc, Chambourcin, and Cab Sauv. They do have whites here too if that’s what you prefer.

Occasionally food trucks set up here but not every weekend so check the schedule. They do have live music often though.

12. Stony Knoll Vineyards

This is THE place to come in the summer to sit on their patio with a glass of sangria. They have the best sangria and I don’t even like sangria that much. Visiting in winter? No worries – they have mulled wine that will knock your socks off.

One neat thing about Stony Knoll is that they are a North Carolina Century Farm which means the land has been in the same family for at least 100 years.

The tasting room has plenty of seating inside plus the outdoor patio with nice views of the vineyard and pond.

Here they serve many dry reds like Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet Franc but they also have dry white and sweet wines. Their Viognier and Vintner’s Bliss Rosé won awards at the 2023 and 2022 NC Fine Wines Competition respectively.

13. Weathervane Winery

Weathervane is definitely a local’s hangout and they have tons of events like live music on the weekends.

You’ll find both sweet and dry wines here and I love their slogan – “Award-Winning Wines Without the Attitude.”

When you visit for a tasting, you have two options to choose from – you can taste their sweet or dry wines. With either tasting, you get to try five different wines.

My favorite was Temperature Rising which is a Tuscan blend but I also liked the Cirrus Red which is their Malbec. I’m not a sweet wine drinker but their Green Apple was refreshing.

They do sell Boar’s Head charcuterie packs and occasionally have food trucks. You’re also allowed to bring your own picnic if you would like.

Inside the tasting room, there is a small retail space where you can buy little gifts and sauces, jams, and jellies.

14. Childress Vineyards

Where are my NASCAR fans at? Richard Childress, who is a racing legend in the NASCAR Hall of Fame, owns this winery and it’s definitely a sight to see.

The grounds are absolutely gorgeous as is the tasting room. If you want to do one of their Luxe Tastings or have a meal at the Bistro then I recommend making a reservation. For wine flights or Champion Tastings, it’s first-come-first-served.

The Bistro offers soups, sandwiches, and some heartier entree options – don’t miss the pimento cheese dip appetizer. This one gets very crowded on the weekends since it’s one of the best wineries in Lexington, NC.

15. Curran Alexander Vineyards

Curran Alexander is best known for their dry red wines and for good reason. Reds are the majority of what they have on their wine list.

They are also in the process of building a new, larger tasting room. One thing that was very convenient was the large parking lot – they have plenty of space even on a busy Saturday.

They typically have live music at least one day every weekend when the weather is nice and this is a beautiful vineyard to take a walk in.

Right out the door from the tasting room, they have multiple tables set up and Adirondack chairs around a small fire pit. The weather was gorgeous so it was really a relaxing afternoon.

The Southern Tour was my favorite wine and it was a red blend. If you are a sweet wine drinker, this isn’t the spot for you.

They do have a few snack items like the Boar’s Head charcuterie plates and hummus but you can also bring your own food.

16. Junius Lindsay Vineyard

This is a unique tasting room that’s actually located in an open-air pavilion. When the weather gets colder, they close in the building with vinyl curtains and heat the space as well.

It’s really a beautiful setting! They have two options for tastings – the Estate Tasting and the Premium Reidel Tasting. I was glad that I upgraded to the Premium Tasting but my sister liked the Estate Tasting – she is a sweet wine drinker.

Their bubbly rosé is good (I don’t usually like rosé) and I loved their Syrah Reserve and the Triomphe. I don’t usually like white wines either but their Second Leaf (a Viognier) was very good.

They lead our tasting at our table and I have to say, it made for a great experience. We were able to sit down and enjoy our tasting without rushing through it.

For food options, they sell small snack items but that’s about it – you can bring your own picnic though and this is the perfect place to have one.

17. JOLO Winery & Vineyards

Another restaurant and winery combo, this is the perfect place to order some appetizers and sit outside for live music on a Sunday afternoon.

The tasting room reminds me of a beautiful French chateau and there is a small pond with a stunning view of Pilot Mountain outside.

You’ll find a wide variety of different wines here so it’s great for a group who has different tastes.

This is one of the pricier Yadkin Valley Wineries and if you’re looking for an upscale experience, this is the one for you. If you want a more laid-back and informal tasting, then I would recommend choosing a different winery on the list.

18. Divine Llama

Wine and llamas – what more could you want? This vineyard has some absolutely incredible wines and you can walk through the farm to see the llamas as you’re enjoying your glass.

Be sure to stop by when they’re doing a craft fair and you’ll probably see someone walking the llamas around on a leash. Needless to say, it’s definitely a unique spot.

One of my favorite wines here is their Merlina which is a Merlot and blackberry juice blend. In addition to their blends, you’ll find Cab Franc, Merlot, and Traminette here.

19. Sanders Ridge

This tasting room is absolutely stunning with its luxury log cabin look and large wraparound porch. It sits back in the woods beside a pond with an adorable little gazebo.

They have white, red, and sweet wines so there’s something for everyone to choose from. They can even make a sangria using their Peach Mango wine that is absolutely mind-blowing. Beer is also on the menu for anyone who doesn’t like wine.

Over the years, they’ve changed up their restaurant and I haven’t been since the new chef took over. They serve lunch everyday and the menu has salads, flatbreads, and sandwiches to choose from.

This is a beautiful place to retreat from the summer heat and enjoy a cold glass while you admire the rustic interior of the tasting room.

20. Roaring River Vineyards

Wine, beer, and incredible food right on the Roaring River. This is one of the best Yadkin Valley wineries with lodging, in my opinion, and if you stay overnight, you’re allowed to fish in the river.

This is another beautiful, rustic tasting room, and the deck extends over the banks of the river so if it’s warm enough be sure to sit outside.

You’ll find a nice selection of reds and whites here but no sweet wines. They also have beer on tap. It’s one of our favorite places to go with family to have lunch or an early dinner.

Stone Mountain State Park is right down the road, so one of my favorite ways to spend a Saturday is a morning hike and then stopping here for lunch and a lazy afternoon. Nobody is bothered if you’re a little sweaty and maybe a tad under-dressed.

21. Piccione Vineyards

The view at Piccione is a reason to visit alone. This winery sits up on the hill just above Raffaldini and has beautiful views of the Brushy Mountains. The sunsets here are gorgeous.

Their wines are also produced in an Italian style and you won’t find a bad wine on the list in my opinion. However, I wouldn’t recommend going here if you’re a sweet wine drinker.

Their wine is top-notch, the views are incredible, and they have a very friendly staff that makes you feel welcome whether it’s your first or fifteenth time there.

We love visiting for their events like the girl scout cookie pairing or during the winter when they have red wine hot chocolate. Their new tasting room will be done soon and I can’t wait!

22. Windsor Run Cellars

The tasting room at Windsor Run is in an adorable little cabin with a massive distillery behind it. They make fortified wine using their own liquor so you better be careful here. In addition to wine, fortified wine, and liquor (as if that wasn’t enough) they also make mead!

There is a wide selection to choose from here and it’s always hard for me to decide what to get when I visit! You’ll find some really unique things here like their Crystal Dreams and Hillbilly Holiday.

In addition to the wine, they also sell cute little gifts – all wine related of course. Windsor Run gets very busy on the weekends so bring your patience with you. The staff is incredibly friendly though.

Pro tip: If you want to buy their liquor, purchases must be made down at the distillery instead of the tasting room. Don’t want you to wait in a long line only to be told you’re in the wrong spot.

23. Dobbins Creek Vineyards

This spot is such a wonderful surprise if you love dry red wines. Not only is their wine some of my favorite in the Yadkin Valley, the bartenders are friendly and knowledgeable, and the view over the mountains is incredible!

Driving out to the tasting room you may feel like you’re headed the wrong direction. You’ll drive down a gravel road back into the woods past multiple homes before you see the tasting room up on the hill.

They have an expansive back deck that invites you to sit and enjoy a glass and their tasting room is open and gorgeous on the inside!

A few of the wines that they offer are Chardonnay, Riesling, Merlot, and Cab Franc.

24. Shadow Springs Vineyard

This tasting room sits just above a small pond and is the perfect way to spend a hot day. Their margarita and strawberry wine will cool you right off. You can even mix them to make a strawberry margarita.

They also sell little gifts in their tasting room so you can browse while you enjoy your wine. With over 20 different wines available, you’re sure to find something that fits your taste.

Hang out in the tasting room to escape the summer heat or if you visit on a nice day then take a walk through the vines.

25. Raffaldini Vineyards

Raffaldini is one of the most popular wineries in the Yadkin Valley and has won multiple awards. This traditional Italian villa sits on a hill with beautifully landscaped grounds.

Fun fact: Raffaldini has a Certified Wildlife Habitat™ on site that provides precious resources needed by birds, butterflies, and frogs.

A walk around the property warrants a visit in itself and you definitely won’t be disappointed with the wines.

The Raffaldini family has strong roots in Italy so their wine is made in the Italian style. They even use an ancient Italian method called Appassimento. You can read more about that on their website.

Note that all guests must be 21 or older to visit and reservations are recommended.

26. Laurel Gray Vineyards

You’ll find a little oasis at Laurel Gray. The tasting room makes it feel like you’re at a friend’s house sipping wine and there are many outdoor seating options. You’ll be surrounded by beautiful gardens with a view of their pond as well.

Their covered patio is inviting with outdoor couches that a comfortable and perfect for groups. They also offer winery tours twice a day for $25/person ($15 if there are more than four people in your group).

Their flights are one of the most expensive in the area but they are large enough to share between two people. They have a nice variety of reds, whites, and a couple sweet wines to try.

There are a number of Yadkin Valley wineries with restaurants and I’ve tried to mention them above, but here is a concise list:

Wine Festivals, Tours, & Trails

With so many wineries in the area, it’s no surprise that we have a few different wine festivals, tours, and trail options.

The best festivals are the Yadkin Valley Wine Festival which is the 3rd Saturday in May in Elkin and the Yadkin Valley Grape Festival which is the 3rd Saturday in October in Yadkinville.

If you’re looking for tour options, Frog Holler Wine Tours and Yadkin Valley Wine Tours are a couple good ones. The Elkin Vine Line is the best budget option and Uncorked is great for visiting the Lexington wineries.

There are multiple different wine trails in the Yadkin Valley. A few popular ones are the Swan Creek Wine Trail, Surry County Wine Trail, and the Southern Gateway Wine Trail.

Technically, there is also a Yadkin Valley Wine Trail which has all of the wineries in the valley on it. You would need to be here for an awful long time to check all of those off though!
