What to Look for in Women’s Snowboarding Pants

Before we dive in, let’s take a look at what makes a great pair of snowboarding pants! If you need the full outfit then check out this complete guide on what to wear snowboarding.

Waterproofing

When investing in snowboarding pants, selecting a material with a waterproof rating between 10,000mm and 15,000mm for light snowfall and between 15,000mm and 20,000mm for heavy snowfall is crucial.

Gore-Tex is an excellent breathable, waterproof material. Most of the products on this list are made with Gore-Tex, but they can be pricier. If you’re looking for a more affordable waterproof material, look for products made with nylon or polyester.

Additionally, fully-taped seams provide the ultimate waterproof protection, but if you’re looking to save a little cash, critically-taped seams are usually more inexpensive because they are only taped in critical areas.

When you’re a beginner snowboarder and wondering if snowboarding is hard, waterproof pants will be your best friend because you will definitely fall when snowboarding for the first time. Bibs are best for learning in my opinion though.

Style

Snowboarding pants come in three styles—shell, insulated, and bibs. Shell pants don’t offer any insulation, but they keep rain, snow, and wind out. Insulated pants provide insulation, so you don’t have to layer up, but they are typically bulkier than shell pants. Bibs offer the best all-around protection and have more storage space, but they generally are the most expensive.

We’ve included all three types of pants on this list, so you can choose which style works best for you!

Breathability

When you’re snowboarding, it’s important to have a material that lets sweat and moisture out without letting snow or rain it.

Look for snowboarding pants that have anywhere from 10,000 to 20,000 grams of breathability. Typically, Gore-Tex products have great breathability ratings.

When you’re in places like Steamboat Springs where you really get a workout riding, this is important.

5. 686 Aura Insulated Cargo Snow Pants

Sizes: XS-XL

Price: $179.95

Let me preface this by saying – the reviews on REI rate these pants a 2.8 but I’ve owned a pair of these for years and love them. They do sit a little low on the waist so if you don’t like low waist pants then you won’t like these.

They look awesome though and have held up for three or four seasons. They’re just now starting to get some rips in the bottom from strapping my bindings on. Mine are aqua blue but now they have an orchid purple color.

The Aura Cargo Snow Pants feature fully-taped seams and for extreme waterproofing and tons of pockets for your phone, keys, snacks, you name it. These pants are also insulated and windproof.

These high-quality women’s snowboarding pants are also equipped with boot gaiters with a boot lace hook which helps keep out snow and mesh-lined inner thigh vents keep you cool.

These bibs also come in a wide range of sizes for multiple body types and some of the best colors I’ve seen this year. Choose from Shady Blue, Wasabi, Wild Ginger, or a few others.
