Where to Stay in St. Thomas, USVI in 2026

Are you looking for where to stay in St. Thomas? I’ve got you covered!

I’ve visited multiple times and stayed at a couple different resorts on the island. Plus, I’ve talked to other travelers who have had great experiences staying on the island, so you can trust my advice when it comes to picking the right spot.

I’ve also taken tours out of many of the other resorts so while I may not have stayed there, I’ve seen lots of the amenities!

So if you’re wondering where to stay in St. Thomas, you’re in good hands. Read on to find out.

The Margaritaville Vacation Club is my personal favorite resort in St. Thomas and I’ve stayed here for a girl’s trip as well as my honeymoon.

This is a super lively spot with a private beach, two pools – one on the hillside overlooking the ocean with a swim-up bar – and a watersports beach hut.

You have the option of staying in a studio, one- , or two-bedroom condos. Each room is equipped with a margarita machine and on our honeymoon they gave us a bottle of rum. Fitting, right?

There is also a Margaritaville Restaurant & 5 O’clock Somewhere Bar located right on the beach.

They host all kinds of events throughout the week at the pool and the small amphitheater by the restaurant.

The location on the East End is really great as well because you’re close to Red Hook but it’s not a far drive into Charlotte Amalie either. It’s close to Coki Beach, Coral World Ocean Park and many of the other fun things to do in St. Thomas.

2. Sapphire Beach Resort

Families will like the homey feel and space offered by Sapphire Beach Resort’s condominiums.

Each unit has a living area and kitchen that includes a full-sized refrigerator and freezer and oven.

If you don’t feel like cooking, there is a restaurant and a beach bar that features live music on site.

Situated right on the beach, the resort also offers a beachside pool. Additionally, there’s a marina if you’d like to rent a boat or jet ski, or book a sailing tour so you can sit back and enjoy the sunset. Many of the best St. Thomas tours leave out of this marina.

Snorkeling equipment and kayaks are also available for rent at the beach. 

The facility does not have elevators. If climbing stairs is a concern, be sure to request a ground floor unit when booking your accommodation.

Also, the condos are individually owned so quality can differ depending on the unit you get. Make sure to do your research before booking.

3. Marriott’s Frenchman Cove

Enjoy your own two- or three-bedroom condo at the colorful Frenchman’s Cove tucked away in a private cove.

The property is one of Marriott’s Villa Resorts and is situated on a hillside with stunning views of Pacquereau Bay.

Only a brief 15-minute drive from King’s airport, you can find yourself relaxing by the beach in no time. 

The family-oriented resort features two swimming pools, a children’s pool, a casual beachside restaurant, and a movie theater. You’ll have everything you need to keep the kids entertained.

The condos come with separate living areas and kitchens equipped with full-sized appliances. There’s even a washer and dryer so you can keep your packing light. 

The water in this area can sometimes be choppy, especially for kids, making it less ideal for snorkeling.

However, with all the other amenities, it may be the best choice for an active family. I’ve been on a couple boat tours out of this marina as well.

4. Ritz-Carlton St. Thomas

If you want luxury, then head for the Ritz-Carlton in St. Thomas. Positioned on Great Bay, the hotel offers spacious accommodations including both rooms and suites.

In front of the property is a coral reef, offering a beautiful option for snorkeling.

You can enjoy the beach, head out to the tennis courts, rent a catamaran or paddleboard, take the kids to the family pool with its water slide, get a workout with a fitness class, or eat at one of the four restaurants. 

The hotel is on the pricier side and may be outside the budget for many travelers visiting St Thomas.

5. Secret Harbour Beach Resort

Secret Harbour Beach Resort is known for having the best snorkeling right off their beautiful beach with crystal clear water. Many locals come here to unwind with a drink and watch the sunset. 

While the units are condos with fully equipped kitchens, there is also a casual and upscale restaurant on site.

In addition, every unit is beachfront and has its own private balcony or patio. You can enjoy views of the setting sun from the privacy of your own room.

If you enjoy lounging at the pool, be aware that it is located a short walk on another property.

For most visitors, this isn’t an issue because the beach is the main draw at Secret Harbour.

6. The Pink Palm Hotel

The Pink Palm Hotel refers to itself as an adult boutique luxury hotel. It’s nestled in the old town area of the Charlotte Amalie district. You’ll find local shops and restaurants within walking distance. 

The hotel features a heated outdoor pool and several gardens throughout the property.

With just 28 rooms, it feels private and exclusive. Guests have the option to eat at the restaurant and bar or walk downtown for meals. 

The rooms are large standard hotel rooms with a bed, sitting area, and bathroom. A small kitchenette with a sink, coffee maker, and mini fridge are also included. 

Some drawbacks to consider are the cold continental breakfast and limited parking. It’s recommended you do not rent a car when visiting the property.

7. Emerald Beach Resort

Emerald Beach Resort is one of the pet friendly resorts on this list. Every room in the resort is beachfront with balconies or windows so you’re sure to have a great view. 

There’s a beautiful pool with a waterfall for that extra little something. The resort is near the airport and can accommodate large groups for weddings or other events. 

It’s worth noting that the resort is not close to popular attractions. There is a shuttle service to Lindberg Bay Hotel and Villa for access to additional amenities.

Lindberg Bay is a popular spot for kayaking in St. Thomas too.

8. Bolongo Bay Beach Resort

Bolongo Bay Beach Resort caters to a younger crowd. They’re known for their snorkel booze hunt where they hide bottles of rum and then challenge guests to find them while snorkeling. They also have a swim up bar and tons of water activities.

This is a budget-friendly resort and there are many fun things to do including trips on their 53-foot catamaran, poolside games, and live entertainment. 

All accommodations at Bolongo Bay Beach Resort consist of conventional hotel rooms. 

While the lively atmosphere may suit solo travelers, it could be too loud for families.

9. Crystal Cove Beach Resort

Crystal Cove Beach Resort is a unique property in St. Thomas. The 112 units are arranged in 2-story buildings that circle a lagoon.

The units are individually owned and rented, and you may find yourself sitting alongside a long-term resident on the beach.

The resort is a 5-mile drive to Red Hook, a small town with good restaurants and shopping. You can also catch a ferry to St. John. 

This is a simple, secure property lacking amenities like a fitness center or room service. However, all condos all have kitchens, and most guests tend to spend their time either at the beach or inside their condo. 

The beach is shared with Sapphire Beach Resort and is popular with cruise ship passengers because it’s one of the nicest beaches in the Virgin Islands. The area can become crowded during tourist season.

10. The Green Iguana Hotel

The Green Iguana is an eco-friendly hotel that filters water rather than use bottles and generates electricity via solar panels. With a limited number of 9 guest rooms, you’ll enjoy a private stay.

Located a short 15-minute drive from the airport and Magens Bay Beach, you’ll have a view of the harbor and access to shopping, museums, and restaurants via the historic 99 steps.

The hotel is surrounded by tropical gardens that serve as havens for local wildlife, including iguanas. 

Each room is unique, but all have at least a kitchenette if not a full kitchen. Check the website to determine which option is best for your needs.

Although the hotel is not located on a beach, it is close to downtown Charlotte Amalie.

It has a small pool, and the hosts provide world-class service. They also offer one-night stays which could be convenient for some travelers.

Northside Studio Vacation Rental

Luxury Beachfront Duplex

This modern, newly renovated condo is in Sapphire Beach Resort, just 20 feet from the ocean.

Enjoy all the resort amenities with your very own ocean view from the balcony. Rent a car and use their free parking, or you can make a reservation for the airport shuttle. 

While all beaches must allow public access, the condo comes with private beach access. 

Visit nearby attractions like Coral World Ocean Park or the St. Thomas Historical Trust Museum. Stay at the resort and get in a round of golf or enjoy one of the many water sports available. 

The condo has one bedroom, but with two sofa beds it can sleep up to 6 adults. In addition, there is a fully equipped kitchen if you feel like saving some money, or you can eat at one of the restaurants on site.

Bare Feet Retreat

The unit can accommodate up to four adults with a twin and king bed plus a sofa bed if needed. 

Enjoy the beach, play a little tennis, or do a little snorkeling. There are plenty of options.

On the Rocks is a private villa located in the Petersburg area. It sits on a cliff with beautiful ocean views from every room. Some guests have reported seeing dolphins play in the cove. 

The property is in a gated, secure neighborhood near Magens Bay Beach. You’ll have air conditioning, a full kitchen, and 2 bathrooms all to yourself.

Spend your evenings on the patio with its beautiful water feature and private pool. 

The villa only accommodates up to 2 guests and no children or pets are allowed.

Where to Stay in St. Thomas: Best Areas

While Saint Thomas USVI is divided into seven subdistricts, five are best for travelers, East End, Southside, Charlotte Amalie, Northside, and Water Island. Each district has its own unique aesthetic. 

Charlotte Amalie

Charlotte Amalie is the cultural hub of St. Thomas. There are several attractions in the area, plus a great downtown area.

Try to visit on a Saturday when local farmers and fishermen head to Market Square to sell their fresh goods. You’ll also find some of the best Caribbean-style restaurants here. 

While the area tends to be less expensive than other districts, it doesn’t have the amenities found at the large resorts.

Typically, hotels in this area are more intimate, like local guesthouses.  You won’t have immediate access to a beach unless you stay at Emerald Beach Resort. 

East End

East End has some of the best beaches and widest selection of resorts in St. Thomas. This area is perfect for visitors wanting to rest and relax on the beach, but who may occasionally look for other activities. 

The center of East End is the village of Red Hook where you’ll find local islanders and sailors at the bars and restaurants.

This is where you can book a charter for scuba diving, snorkeling, and even a booze cruise. One of the best beaches in the USVI, Coki Beach, is a few miles from Red Hook and a must for any St. Thomas itinerary.

Additionally, Coral World Ocean Park, a family-friendly institution with dolphins, sea lions, and views of the underwater world is also nearby. 

The downside of East End is that this is the most popular area for tourists and can become crowded.

Southside

Although all beaches in St. Thomas must allow public access, the beaches of Southside are almost exclusively used by hotel guests.

This makes it the perfect spot for anyone wanting to relax and get away from the crowds. This is the closest you’ll get to your own private beach. 

Three of the most popular resorts, Limetree Beach Resort, Bolongo Bay, and Marriott Frenchman’s Cove are in Southside. 

Nearby Compass Point Marina offers boat charters to Buck Island and Christmas Cove for snorkeling. 

While you may never care to leave your resort, one downside is that everything beyond the resort requires a car. 

Northside

The one word that sums up Northside is private. This is where most of the permanent residents live. Staying in Northside means you’ll be renting a private villa or apartment. 

The upside is that there is less traffic and no crowds, just beautiful views. Here you’ll find the world-famous Magens Bay.

There are also tropical botanical gardens and a few gourmet restaurants. 

The villas usually offer private pools and patios with great views of the Atlantic Ocean. While a car may be necessary in this area, you probably won’t use it frequently.

Water Island

Technically, Water Island is the 4th US Virgin Island. To reach it, you’ll need to take a short ferry ride from Charlotte Amalie.

The island is quiet, and most people use golf carts to get around. You’ll be renting a villa here, not a hotel room. 

One of the highlights of Water Island is Honeymoon Beach, considered a top beach in the Caribbean.

On site there is a beach bar, and you can rent gear for water sports. This is a popular spot for people visiting for the day. 

If you choose to stay overnight, there are no stores or amenities. You’ll need to bring all your food and gear with you.

Water Island is a destination for lying on the beach or snorkeling, there isn’t much else in the area.

FAQs on Where to Stay in St. Thomas

What are the safest areas of St. Thomas?

The East End/Red Hook area in St. Thomas is typically the safest area on the island. If you are in downtown Charlotte Amalie, stick to the waterfront area and Main Street and those will be the safest spots downtown.

Which side of St. Thomas has better beaches?

In addition to being the safest area, East End also has some of the best beaches in St. Thomas like Coki Beach, Lindquist Beach, and Sapphire Beach.

Is it better to stay on St. John or St. Thomas?

This depends on what kind of vacation you’re looking for. St. Thomas is lively and has more amenities, restaurants, and bars. If you want a more quiet and secluded getaway, then St. John would be a great choice.

Is St. Thomas safe to visit?

Yes, St. Thomas is generally thought of as a safe place to visit. Stay in tourist areas for the best experience though do be on the lookout as petty crimes still happen.

How many days do you need in St. Thomas?

I recommend spending at least four days in St. Thomas and ideally an entire week. There are so many fun things to do in St. Thomas that you’ll want to have plenty of time to fit it all in.

When is the best time to visit St. Thomas?

Personally, I love visiting in shoulder season which is April through June. I’ve been twice during this time and the weather is amazing and there are fewer crowds.

Is St. Thomas expensive?

St. Thomas can be expensive but like all destinations, there are ways to cut costs. Cook some of your meals instead of eating out. Choose a budget-friendly hotel or vacation rental. Bring your own snorkel gear instead of renting.
